The development process of sanitary napkins

According to records, sanitary napkins originated from bandages used during World War I. At that time, American female nurses serving in France wrapped cotton in bandages as menstrual supplies. These products were safe, clean and hygienic to use. They could be discarded directly. They don’t need to wash or reuse. This was the earliest prototype of sanitary napkins.

During World War I, Kimberley Company in the United States developed and produced Cellucotton material, which had a water absorption performance many times higher than pure cotton and was welcomed by medical personnel on the battlefield. However, with the end of World War I in 1918, the demand for Cellucotton in the battlefield medical market sharply declined. Kimberley decided to use Cellucotton to produce sanitary napkins and launched the first disposable sanitary napkin in 1921, ushering in the era of industrial mass production of sanitary napkins. In 1929, duct type sanitary tampons were born in the United States. In 1969, hot melt adhesive products and technology were applied, producing "self-adhesive back adhesive sanitary napkins". Since then, sanitary napkins no longer need to be fixed with pins, straps, etc., and can be directly attached to underwear.

China began producing sanitary napkins in the early 1980s. In 1982, Beijing No.11 Paper Mill was the first to introduce sanitary napkin equipment and produce straight sanitary napkins. Heng'an, Hangzhou Yuhang Paper Mill, and Foshan Weili Paper Products Co., Ltd. (now known as Qisheng Company) are among the earliest domestic enterprises to produce sanitary napkins. In 1991, Procter&Gamble was the first to launch wing shaped sanitary pads at its Guangzhou factory. In 1992, sanitary pad products appeared in the Chinese market. Subsequently, with the continuous development of technology and materials, the surface layer, core body, and product types of sanitary napkins continue to iterate and update.

After more than 100 years of continuous improvement, sanitary napkins have now been able to meet the hygiene and care requirements of women of appropriate age during menstruation.
